You can read Jeff Penczak's early review in The Terrascope right HERE.

New Kelly Releases

Two new Jeff Kelly releases are available now on St. Brigid Records' Bandcamp.  The single, Alleys of Madrid, is a lush new recording, complete with Flugelhorn by Seattle musician, Eric Padget.  The digital album, Today I'll Go Away: Home Recordings 1983, features 17 tracks previously unavailable, though three - 'Broken Heart,' 'Hang Something Up On The Wall' and 'A World Without You' - were released on Jeff's Baroquen Hearts cassette in 1985.  That album has yet to be reissued.

The new Green Pajamas album, PHANTOM LAKE: NORTHERN GOTHIC 3, will be released on compact disc March 16th by Green Monkey Records. (It is already available as a digital download from Bandcamp.) The CD has twelve songs - two written by Eric Lichter, three written by Laura Weller, six written by Jeff Kelly and one written by Laura and Jeff.  The CD cover art features six stunning black and white images, photographed in rural Washington by Susanne Kelly.  A full lyric sheet is also included with the CD release.

From the official press release:

Phantom Lake: Northern Gothic 3 is the final installment of the trilogy which began in 2002 with Northern Gothic (Camera Obscura). It was followed up by, Box of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2 (Hidden Agenda) in 2007.

When Laura Weller and Jeff Kelly were thinking about where their next project might go, Laura introduced the idea of writing songs inspired by childhood. She had grown up in a neighborhood called Phantom Lake, memories of which eventually inspired four songs on this record. Jeff also drew from youth, remembering trips to Lost Lake, about twelve miles out of Shelton, Washington, where relatives had a cabin, as well as many vacations to the Washington coast over the years. Eric Lichter remembers a family from his past in the song, “The Rosebergs,” about a catastrophic tsunami roaring in off of the Pacific.

These are the same landscapes that populated many of the songs on the two previous Northern Gothic albums. The grey skies, the endless evergreens, the “black and blue moon” and “a thousand crows” which hang over small lakeside or West Coast towns populated by the lonesome, the unlucky-in-loves and even a few slightly eerie children.

This is a dark album. It is about obsession and sorrow and murder and too much whisky. The characters that permeate these songs exist in the shadows, often in the margins of society. These lost souls of the northern gothic world of Phantom Lake remind us of what it is to be human.

A new Green Pajamas album, SUPERNATURAL AFTERNOON, will be out soon on UK based, Sugarbush Records.  The album, a compilation of recent recordings and digital singles, will be released as a 12" LP on purple vinyl.  The album will not be released in CD format.  The record was produced by Jeff Kelly and features a cover drawing, Zitkala-Sa, by his wife, Susanne.

All but one of the songs, "Ancient Lake" by Eric Lichter, are written by Jeff.  Here's the list...

Side A:

January Girl

Big Black Storm (Single version)

Who Is The Girl (Version 2)

Supernatural Afternoon

The Jailer's Song

Side B:

Kill The Power

Red Bird (Single version)

Ancient Lake

The Red, Red Rose

Raise Ravens

"The Red, Red Rose" and "Raise Ravens" are remastered tracks from the previous RED, RED ROSE CD EP on Green Monkey Records.  None of the other songs have ever been available in a physical format.   The word from Sugarbush is that this might be their best sounding Pajamas issue yet and the other three vinyl LPs, DEATH BY MISADVENTURE, IF YOU KNEW WHAT I DREAMED and TO THE END OF THE SEA, are all remarkably good pressings.

Surprise Video Release!

The surprise, new Green Pajamas video, "Kill The Power," begins ugly and angry but ends very upbeat: It re-enforces the idea of "killing" the current fascist leaning U.S. government, by way of persistent and peaceful protest.

The digital single is out next week on Green Monkey Records.

You can see the video on YouTube or on our website right HERE.

The Green Pajamas will once again open an evening with MKB Ultra on March 11th.  Jeff Kelly is a big fan of the band and the PJs are very happy to play this special show with them along with the legendary, Sage, at The Royal Room in Seattle's Columbia City.

This will be the last Green Pajamas live date for a spell so please come early as they will go on first, at 9:00 PM!

Advance tickets - $8.00 ($10.00 night of show) - are available here: http://www.strangertickets.com/events/41242322/mkb-ultra-w-sage-and-green-pajamas

New Video: When Juliet Smiles

The latest music video for TO THE END OF THE SEA is out now on YouTube.  Carrie Von Kiel portrays Juliet in "When Juliet Smiles" which also features Jeff as the lighthouse keeper. Laura joins Jeff performing the song in the video, directed and filmed by Susanne Kelly.  While editing, Jeff added the title - A Short Film About Loving - just a fun nod to one of his favorite directors, Krzysztof Kieslowski, and his, "A Short Film About Killing."  You can view "When Juliet Smiles" right HERE

Sea Of Secrets Video!

Sea Of Secrets is the latest video release from the album, TO THE END OF THE SEA, by The Green Pajamas. The song was written by Laura and features her and cellist, Phil Hirschi, performing the song on the edge of Puget Sound.  You can see it HERE or view it on the new facebook page, all about the album, here: TO THE END OF THE SEA.

From the Green Monkey Records website...

The weather begins to turn. The leaves begin to drop. I think the fall is upon us. And what is a better fall joy than an all-new Green Pajamas album, eighteen snippets of pleasure.

To that end, we are thrilled to present To The End Of The Sea, The Green Pajamas’ first new studio album (buy it here) since

2012’s Death By Misadventure. We are releasing the album (the PJs thirty-third) on CD and download. The album will also be released in a 300-copy limited vinyl edition with Sugarbush Records of England (date TBA). As is usually the case, we have 50 numbered and autographed CD copies available direct from Green Monkey – first come first serve!

For this album, head-Pajama Jeff Kelly went to his roots, re-embracing his love of 1960’s pop. It takes much more of an organic approach to the recording process than his work of recent years. Jeff wanted to reach back to Pajamas albums like Strung Behind The Sun and All Clues Lead To Meagan’s Bed and go with that sort of aesthetic again: sound effects, backwards guitars, lots of vocal harmonies, violin and cello.

To The End Of The Sea tells the story of a lighthouse keeper, the mysterious woman he finds on his beach after a storm one night and what happens from there. Who is Juliet? Fallen from a star, a mermaid or maybe just a mysterious woman? It’s a sort of a sci-fi romance micro-rock opera, seasoned with a pinch of the gothic (the cover shot comes from the Hubble telescope via NASA). Most of the 18 songs are short and sweet, tied into two long medleys. Many were in fact recorded in that fashion, with one song running right into the next and then on to the next song.

I have been making records with Jeff for a long time. This is one of his best.

The first video from the album is “Ten Million Light Years Away” with two more in the works; there are plans for a ridiculous 7:00AM ocean shoot at Grayland in the works.

New Video: Ten Million Light Years Away

The new Green Pajamas album, TO THE END OF THE SEA, will be released September 16th.  You can see the first video, Ten Million Light Years Away, right now right HERE!

New Album News: "It's Very Exciting"

Jeff Kelly and Tom Dyer are putting the finishing touches on the new Green Pajamas album this week.  Titled, TO THE END OF THE SEA, the CD is scheduled for release in early September on the Green Monkey label wth the release date of the vinyl LP from Sugarbush Records, TBA.  The CD and vinyl releases will feature alternate cover art.

“It’s a kind of a return to our roots - our psychedelic origin,” states Jeff.   A conceptual album, TO THE END OF THE SEA, is heavy on hooks, vocal harmonies and ringing guitars.  Oh, and cellos, courtesy of Phil Hirschi.

Created specifically for release on vinyl, the record is an album length medley of 18 songs, divided into two parts…sides 1 and 2.

Guest vocalist and daughter of cellist Phil, Elise Hirschi, sings the album title song, "To the End of the Sea," in Spanish: "Al Fin de la Mar."  "When I heard her sing I knew we had to get her on this record," says Jeff.

As mentioned in a previous post, the PHANTOM LAKE album is still in the works but will now probably be released in early 2017.   “I just got a little side-tracked with this (TO THE END OF THE SEA) record and it became the priority," Kelly said.  "It’s very exciting.  I think people are really going to dig this a lot!”

Green Pajamas Single

The Green Pajamas are hard at work on a new album to be called PHANTOM LAKE.  In the meantime, they have released a new single, exclusively available on Bandcamp, called Red Bird.  Jeff says: "It might have been called 'I dreamed I saw Zitkala-Sa,' as that's what the song is about."  The song has the classic, guitar driven, Green Pajamas sound, clocking in at just under 4 minutes.

The cover art features an iconic photo of the Sioux writer, poet, teacher, activist and musician, Zitkala-Sa, taken by Gertrude Käsebier at the end of the 19th Century.

"It's dreamy and sensual, there's no agenda," Kelly states about the song. You can listen and download ($1.00!) the new song at the St. Brigid Records Bandcamp page,  HERE

New On Bandcamp!

Jeff Kelly's Hidden Agenda album's, INDISCRETION, and, FOR THE SWAN IN THE HALLWAY, are now available to stream or buy at $7.00 each.  You can listen HERE at the Kelly/Green Pajamas St. Brigid Records Bandcamp page, which features a a growing number of albums and official bootleg recordings.

Regarding, INDISCRETION, the All Music Guide stated in 2002: "Kelly's most straightforward solo record, it's also one of his best albums period, including his Green Pajamas Records."   **** 1/2

In 2004 Splendid e-zine said"FOR THE SWAN IN THE HALLWAY is that rare album, full of sweet melodies and unforgettable hooks, but not defined by them.  It's dark, powerful pop, guided by intelligence and powered by passion.  If you take love seriously, you're going to want this album."

Susanne Kelly's true story of being walked home by Ted Bundy when she was six years old is the latest Fur For Fairies single, I Didn't Know (b/w Into The Woods).  Produced by Jeff, it is available to stream or buy here on the Green Monkey Records Bandcamp Page .

Susanne: "People are always horrified when I tell them that Ted Bundy walked me home from my friend’s birthday party when I was about six years old. I used this terrifying juxtaposition as framework for a song about guilt. I didn’t ever talk with my friend about how she felt after finding out her mother’s boyfriend “Ted” was Ted Bundy. I still feel guilt about that. That same birthday I cheated on a party game – guilt again. Guilt I felt as a child and guilt as an adult woman who doesn’t always do the right thing."

You can see the beautiful (if slightly spooky video) right HERE.

Jeff has just produced a new Fur For Fairies song, Into The Woods, which can be downloaded FREE!

She Says No Video By FFF

Green Monkey Records has released the fourth Fur For Fairies video.  What was originally a rock song written by Jeff in the 1970's, She Says No, sung by Susanne Kelly to a Wurlitzer electric piano accompaniment, is now quiet and contemplative, the video stark and mysterious.  You can see it HERE.

Volume Two Now Available: OF WINE AND TEARS

OF WINE AND TEARS: HOME RECORDINGS 1991-1996 VOL. 2 is now available on Bandcamp.  This is another 18 song collection, part two of a personal selection of 36 unreleased recordings.  Jeff states: "This is the stuff that lead up to STRUNG BEHIND THE SUN in 1997.  A lot of these tracks were written and recorded in that same way. A lot of the the arrangements are loose and spontaneous, sometimes goofy, sometimes good.  Sometimes I had a written song, sometimes only a germ of an idea and sometimes, no idea at all when I would sit down at my keyboard to record.  I was lucky most of the old cassettes I dug out still sounded pretty good after sitting in a drawer for 20 years!"

OF WINE AND TEARS is available HERE.

Jeff has released, via Bandcamp, volume one of a two part collection of home recordings from the 1990's: A WHISPER OF RAIN.  Most of the 18 songs are acoustic guitar or keyboard based.  No grunge?

"I was listening to Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake and really mostly jazz and classical music at the time, I didn't know much about Nirvana except they were from here.  I came to appreciate some of that stuff later, when it was all just about over.  I did like IN UTERO."

Jeff's liner notes state: "This is a selection of songs I recorded at home between 1991 - 1996. Some were ad-libbed, unfinished ideas. Some were used as demos. Some could have been released "as is" by The Green Pajamas. All of these songs were recorded on a 4 or 8 track cassette deck, usually in one session. Some were written, recorded and mixed, all in one session. These are a few of the ones that have stuck with us over the years."

The download is available HERE.

Volume two will be released within the next few weeks.

video still

Green Monkey Records has released two brand new videos for the Fur For Fairies album.  The melancholy, bourbon-fueled lament, "Sea Of Cortez" and "If I Kissed An Angel," filmed in eastern Washington.  Both can be viewed HERE.

FUR FOR FAIRIES First Video Released

Green Monkey Records has just released the first music video by Fur For Fairies, produced by Jeff Kelly. You can watch it right here: Just Like The End Of The World.

The album is out August 21st.

Ultra-Rare Green Pajamas

Jeff is now posting "ultra-rare" Green Pajamas tracks on Facebook, starting with the never before released, "Agent 99 (Mix 1)," from 1997. He will post a new song each week. Right now, you can also hear an alternate mix of "Just A Breath Away" from SEVEN FATHOMS DOWN AND FALLING and "The Ravenna Witch no. 2," right here: The Green Pajamas Facebook.

Still from the "Like The End Of The World" video.

Susanne Kelly is FUR FOR FAIRIES on this new rock and roll album produced by Jeff Kelly.  The CD will be released in a beautiful eco wallet edition by Green Monkey Records next month.  Often, funky, hard rocking and even a little bit jazzy in places, this record is very different than Jeff and Susanne's quieter, more introspective, BY RECKLESS MOONLIGHT.  "We were listening to a lot of soul music and lots of swinging Blue Note stuff from the mid-sixties like Lou Donaldson when we recorded this," says Jeff.  "I also got a new studio set-up which enabled me to do some interesting things that I couldn't do in the past, which gives it a fresh sound." Susanne's lusty, earthy vocals also guarantee this isn't a Green Pajamas record though Jeff does sneak in some PJs like electric guitar here and there..

You can see the album/video trailer right HERE or view it on YouTube.
